With the South African summer season of cycling upon us, it’s time to upgrade new rubber. Your tires are your contact point with the road, and are possibly the best value change you can make for your riding for 2016. With a lot of the road cycling community shifting to wider tire trend, some people are wondering why they should switch away from the old 23c standard?
Our suppliers at Continental explain it best…
In this respect, Doug Ryder of MTN Qhubeka Team ordered 70 Grand Prix 4000 x 25C S2 tyres from us 2 weeks ago for the team’s training bikes. They will be using 25mm Competition tubbies on their race bikes. The team (Dimension Data for 2016) will be using Conti tyres in 2016.
The same goes for Team Sky who have discarded 23mm tyres in favour of 25mm and even going as far as using 28mm tyres in the Paris-Rubaix race where the cobbles are almost impossible to attack at speed on narrow tyres. Team Sky will continue using 25mm Conti Pro Competition tubbies in 2016 after a successful 2015 season on them this year.
Please note that 25C tyres will fit standard rims with widths varying between 13mm and 17mm, so there’s probably no need to switch your current wheelset
